Yasmine Gateau for NPR: depiction of cracks creating a ravine-like atmosphere with public education and racial majority schools in the U.S.A
The subtle grasp of your school’s diversity can say a lot. Walking through the halls, glancing at the upcoming of several acquaintances. What was their origin? Is my school similar to others? Envision the atmosphere of different schools, understand the scopes of what makes up your school.
Education has been on the frontline recently for student demographics and generalized racial recording for analytics and districts' yearly reports. Subsequently, the purpose of recording district’s demographics is to appropriately realize contributing factors to ensure the school’s adequacy in equality; however, current events have now alienated the bridge-way to equality– the dismantlement of the Department of Education (DOE). Wait–what does DOE have any correlation to racial equality?
This all comes down to systematic racism. According to Forbes, “data show that school districts attended predominantly by students of color receive $23 billion less in funding.” Compared to dominated white-school districts,
students that have education usually have less access to resources within their boundary: under-qualified teachers, less extra-curricular opportunities, outdated material, and even more. Additionally, schools with a dominated percentage of people of color have infrastructure problems. Subsequently, location has a major role
In funding. Areas in surrounding neighborhoods of cities or rural schools with a domination of people of color usually get less funding compared to other districts. Additionally, people with disabilities can not have an access system due to no prevalent funding.
The component of federal funding takes accountability for helping disadvantaged-schools. Subsequently, DOE helps with 504 plans for students that need accommodations.
Hidden disabilities within students can be addressed in school, and sufficiently help students with their strengths or struggles. Without funding, assistance will be strenuous to acquire. Overall, FAFSA is greatly depended on, many people need aid to fund college, without it, millions of students will not be able to attend college unless a scholarship or full-ride. That has a possibility to not happen to everyone; however, FAFSA is likely shifting to the small business department–not confirmed, though. The insight of the situation is quite limited; however, DOE’s removal will cause issues towards society, and create ableism and racial inequality within the public school system.
